ABGC Grower Support (Biosecurity)

Since the first detection of Panama disease Tropical Race 4 (TR4) in the Tully region back in 2015, the Australian banana industry has worked together to safeguard the future of our crops and our communities.

The Panama TR4 Program was initially established by Biosecurity Queensland in response to the outbreak. Now, following the transition to industry leadership, the program is delivered by ABGC’s Grower Support (Biosecurity) team.

The team’s vital work includes regular on-farm inspections across Far North Queensland, alongside support and investigating options for growers managing TR4. Stronger than ever, the Program is working hand-in-hand with industry to ensure a sustainable future for banana growers, through proactive biosecurity and risk management.”

Supporting Growers, Protecting the Industry

Surveillance is truly a team effort, with collaboration from growers, farm workers, suppliers, and industry partners all doing their part. Together, we are fulfilling our General Biosecurity Obligation (GBO) by:

  • Practicing strong on-farm biosecurity
  • Taking part in inspections and monitoring
  • Promptly reporting any suspected TR4 cases

With the help of Biosecurity Queensland, our on-ground teams are working closely with growers to ensure practical, effective steps are taken to manage risks and protect our future.
