Gavin Scurr

Managing Director, Pinata Farms
Gavin Scurr

Gavin Scurr is a third-generation fruit grower and respected industry leader from Piñata Farms which produces four crops over some 1000 hectares on seven farms in the Northern Territory, Queensland and Tasmania.
Gavin’s career includes expanding pineapple operations with a focus on the fresh market, diversifying into strawberries 25 years ago and commercialising Honey Gold mangoes in 2009. In 2015, Piñata Farms and global berry giant BerryWorld Group established joint venture BerryWorld Australia to commercialise exclusive berry genetics for the Australian market.
Gavin is managing director of BerryWorld Australia, past chairman of the Australian Fresh Produce Alliance and sits on various industry boards including Berries Australia, Raspberry and Blackberry Australia and the Northern Territory Farmers Association.
A known innovator, Piñata Farms was the first to grow pineapples commercially at Mareeba, Far North Queensland. It also introduced night picking of mangoes to retain freshness and ensure better conditions for pickers. It was an early adopter of polytunnels to grow berries, became the first producer to use metal detectors in berry packing and continuously changes punnet configurations to improve quality, presentation and reduce waste including introducing heat-sealed punnets.
