Sharan is a Technical Officer at the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI) at South Johnstone, , where he has been working since September 2023. Originally from southern India, he relocated to Australia to complete a Master’s in Agricultural Science (Horticulture) at the University of Queensland’s Gatton campus. At DPI, Sharan focuses on agronomic evaluation of newly imported TR4-resistant Cavendish varieties and Race 1 resistant Lady Finger-like cultivars. He also manages the Australian field collection of banana varieties—a vital genetic resource supporting ongoing research and industry development. Sharan is passionate about banana diversity and enjoys identifying different varieties, exploring their genetic traits, and discovering their potential to address industry challenges. One of his favourite aspects of the job is taste-testing new banana varieties, which allows him to experience firsthand the diverse flavours and textures they offer.
