Philippe Tixier is an agroecologist working at CIRAD since 2005. He carries-out and supervises research aiming at improving the sustainability of tropical agrosystems, with a focus on banana-based systems. After a PhD in agronomy and modelling that led to the development of the SIMBA model, he is now working at understanding how ecological processes related to biodiversity can be put together to make banana systems more sustainable (specially to reduce pesticide application). After more than 12 years in Guadeloupe and Martinique, and 4 years in Costa Rica, he is now based in Laos working for the development of the production of banana, coffee, and tea by small farmers, in particular in agroforestry systems. He has several ongoing projects on the sustainability of export banana systems and those intended for local markets, in the French West Indies, Asia, Africa and Latin America.
